Maggie Lindemann burst onto the scene in 2016 with the sassy pop hit, “Pretty Girl.” The track was easy on the ears and pushed back on society’s idea of the ideal, one-dimensional woman. In the decade since “Pretty Girl,” Lindemann has matured into the emo pop queen of our dreams, but her blunt lyricism and fierce attitude have remained the same. Audiences were able to see her transformation for themselves at the Philadelphia stop of the I Feel Everything Tour, Lindemann’s second headlining tour, on February 28.

Opening the show was Argentinian-Peruvian singer Ayleen Valentine who commanded the stage as she emerged wearing a silver evening dress paired with a gas mask. The dramatic entry made conversations among the audience stop in their tracks, with one person audibly commenting, “She looks ethereal.”

Valentine primed the audience to  “feel everything” with raw and vulnerable indie-pop songs like “wanted to **** myself today," "don’t be sad,” and “sex symbol.” But Valentine’s cheerful, earnest commentary between songs kept the mood light and charmed the crowd. She gave the audience room to exorcise all their demons by jumping, dancing and making sure they screamed as loud as they possibly could.

Finally, the house lights dimmed,  Lindemann entered the stage with her band. She kicked off with “fang,” the in-your-face hyperpop track that opens her latest album, i feel everything. Lindemann followed with “spine” and “joyride,” two fun songs that had the audience dancing and shouting along. Her “fuck you and fuck your rules” energy set the tone for the rest of the set and her sultry vocals were captivating to experience live.

Lindemann played every song from i feel everything but also made sure to throw in some fan favorites. She mentioned that she’d heard from fans that there weren’t enough songs from her debut album SUCKERPUNCH. As a treat, she added “hear me out” to the setlist. Also on the setlist were “Crash and Burn,” “Scissorhands,” and “Knife Under My Pillow” off of PARANOIA, some of our fave crashout anthems.

Each song on the setlist immersed the audience into the relatable highs and lows of the twenty-something queer and female experience. The pop punk hard-hitters that listeners know and love were deftly woven between toxic relationships (“she knows it”), heartbreak (“mourning” and uncertainty about the future (“suburbs”). Lindemann got vulnerable about her mental health struggles in “2022,” which really hit home for many. Did none of us have an original experience that year?

The show closed on a high note with “one of the ones” and “i feel everything.” Chants for an encore echoed throughout the venue, and Lindemann came back out – this time with a guest. Fans screamed like mad for Siiickbrain and her signature shaved head. She and Lindemann performed “break me!” and “GASLIGHT!” with Siiickbrain getting the crowd to open up a mosh pit to the songs’ headbanging guitar riffs.

The entire night was a cathartic experience for fans and casual listeners alike, and we can’t wait to see what direction Lindemann will go in next.
